From Within Darkness, the Lightness is Born
The other day, I was researching the Dead Sea, writing about the Blue Flame Apothecary Members Portal November Treat, when I came across this beautiful phrasing “Even within the negative muddy, unholy impurity, there is the redeeming quality of the challenge that slime, and darkness poses to activate the hidden holiness. This is why the yetzar hara (evil impulse) is called “very good” (Midrash Bereishit Rabbah 9:7).” [Woman on the Land]. This is also how this Blood Moon Eclipse on 8 November feels, within all the falling away, the loud distractions, the “othering” there is something beautiful emerging. The lightness is being born from within the darkness.
We are deep within the Eclipse wormhole now, it might feel like we are being pulled apart in a thousand different directions. There is so much happening in our world, wherever you are. Here in the US, for the first time ever, a blood moon eclipse is falling on our election day. Things feel heated and unstable, the Mars retrograde energy is hitting heavy, as is that tense Saturn Uranus square. However within the astro chart there is also much evidence of the new that is being brought through. In some ways it feels like we are collectively being brought through a “dark night of the soul” so that we may experience the joy of being reborn.
This reminds me of a vision, a realization I had during a meditation a while back. A remembrance that when we are born we emerge from darkness into light, and as many near death experiencers report when we die similarly we move from darkness into a bright light. Coming in or going out, it is all-ways the darkness into the light.
Let’s get into this eclipse shall we, at 3:02am US Pacific time the Full Moon peaks in Taurus, exactly conjunct Uranus and very close to the North Node. Directly across the wheel the Sun, in Scorpio, is nestled between the South Node and Mercury on one side and Venus on the other. The Earth will move between the Sun and Moon over the course of more than 3 hours with the deep red of totality lasting for nearly 90 mins. Not quite as long as our Scorpio Blood Moon Eclipse back in May, but still a long eclipse, this also means that it will be visible, in partial form anyways, almost everywhere on the planet. Generally with an eclipse those areas where the totality hits are also the most likely to be “impacted” by energetics of the event. Yup you guessed it the totality of this eclipse is tracking right over large swaths of the United States, just as we wake up for the midterm elections…
Rather than going into fear about this, however, let's take a quick peek at some of the amazing potentialities on offer during this event. We find the Moon and Uranus next to the North Node in Taurus. The North Node brings in our collective destiny, in Taurus this connects to our physical beings, to the material world. Uranus is all about quick, “lightning fast” change, this planet is often called the “Great Awakener”. The moon represents our unconscious and subconscious realms. As the Earth casts her shadow over the moon, the planet of awakening will become visible (though you might need binoculars, Uranus is pretty far away). As will shooting stars from the constellation Taurus. The Pleiades will also be visible just above the reddened moon. Let’s take a moment to feel the frequency of a planet that seeks to awaken sleepers, being revealed as the Moon (our sub/unconscious) is eclipsed by the Earth as they sit together within reach of our collective destiny. This to me feels like an offering to awaken from your unconscious routines, to truly see where things are headed. Once seen you can make a choice, stay the course or change directions.
Which reminds me, we still have Hekate (Guardian of the Crossroads) in Cancer sitting across from Medusa (Empowerment/ Reclamation) in Capricorn forming an actual crossroads in the form of a T-Square with Chiron in Aries.. You may recall the wound represented by Chiron in Aries is about empowerment, triggering us to ask “Who AM I” and truly seek the answer. Capricorn, where Medusa sits is about our structures and foundations, Cancer is about where we belong, our family ties. Here we can see Hekate and Medusa offering us an opportunity to explore the truth of our foundations and where we belong as Chiron invites us to remember who we really are. Through this deep exploration we are given the space to reform our foundations and what it means to belong to fit the truth of who we are.
OK back to the Eclipse, so we have Uranus waking us up from a deep sleep, so we can see which way we are headed. Across the wheel we have the Sun (Outward expression/ sense of self) sitting in Scorpio, the Underworld, with the South Node and Mercury on one side and Venus on the other. Mercury is very closely conjunct the Sun, it feels like the messenger is activating light codes to help us access, unlock the gifts held within our past experiences (South Node); so we can incorporate them into this new sense of self that is being awakened from the depths of our subconscious. Throughout the proceedings Venus leads the way and helps us connect to the Love hidden within these depths.
I feel called to stop for a moment, there is A LOT going on during this eclipse (throughout the rest of the year really) and much of it could be interpreted as scary, hell it could be downright terrifying, and I am sure that many will share this message when they speak of this Full Moon's energy. It does feel important to understand that as with all transformations the frequency of fear can be very strong. I am not trying to “spiritual bypass” or “ostrich'' what is happening in the world around us. I do love a pair of “rose-colored glasses” though; and when I feel into the energy of this eclipse and the next couple months I have a sense of rejoicing, of dancing this dance of existence upon the burning dance floor. Perhaps this is because I am so tuned in to the possibilities that are being offered, the ability to transform and remake our world into a place of inclusivity, of equality and empowerment. I can feel the current of LOVE that is shifting in the tectonic plates of the earth, flowing through the grid lines. Almost hidden beneath the din of the crashing and falling of “how things have always been”. The world of power over, of “othering”, of fear is having the curtain pulled back, being exposed and as we open our eyes and see the truth, even though it is hard we will let it fall away.
Speaking of foundations, I mentioned that this eclipse is activating the Uranus-Saturn square that has been active since 2020 and was the loudest astrological frequency of 2021. This is true, interestingly however it is another foundational energy that is making an even closer T-Square between the Sun and Moon. Shiva, also known as “The Destroyer” is sitting at 16° of Aquarius making an exact square to the Moon and Uranus at 16° of Taurus and the Sun at 16° Scorpio (Mercury is at 15°52’ so we could reasonably say the messenger of the gods is in on this exact party too). Here I am feeling Shiva’s moniker “the Destroyer”, he is the Supreme Lord who creates, protects and transforms the universe, like Kali, Shiva will destroy in order to protect and transform. Through this T-Square with our Blood Moon Eclipse Shiva is helping to reveal the already broken aspects of our foundations, the things that are actually destroying us, in order to shake them off. Shaking things up is also a major aspect of Uranus’, which is associated with Earthquakes of all kinds.
Before we move on to some of the other aspects during this eclipse, Kali and Venus want the floor… I mentioned earlier that Venus is conjunct to the Sun in Scorpio during the eclipse, this frequency of love is sitting at 20° almost exactly across from where Kali is doing her backwards dance back through Taurus at 21°. It feels like they are reminding us that every secret being revealed, every structure that's falling away, all the ways that our world seems to be “falling apart’ is being done in the service of Love. It is Love asking us to remember these systems are broken, they are based on faulty premises, lies, deceit. They are built upon foundations of fear and “powering over”. As we let them fall away we are held in the warm embrace of Kali Ma and Venus, the movie might be scary but it will have a happy ending they seem to be saying.
There is another mother energy that is very active during this Eclipse. The mother of the harvest, of the reaping and sowing, Ceres, is sitting in Virgo at 16°, in an exact trine to the Moon and Uranus and an exact sextile to the Sun (Mercury). I keep hearing ‘you reap what you sow’, Virgo is the energy of the virgin, but not in the current definition of virgin. Before we created all these rules about women and sex and property, the word virgin was used to describe an unmarried female, it simply meant “whole unto self” not yet bound to another. It had nothing to do with the hymen. Here we can see even in how the meaning of the word virgin was transformed we have created a sense of dis-empowerment. Over the past couple thousand years we have been reaping these seeds and it is harvest time. I can feel here the transformation being offered as Venus is also shifting her star point from Scorpio to Libra over the next couple years. We are being given an opportunity over this time period to create some new hybrid heirloom seeds, to gather the qualities that are empowering from the current seeds and blend them with the new, the sense of collaboration, justice and equality that is part of Libra’s template. We have a bit of time to blend these energies letting the old taboos fall away as we remember that in all our forms we are loved and all our forms are love.
Back to Kali, whose energy is very active during this eclipse and throughout November-December as she moonwalks back towards another exact conjunction with Uranus during the last week of November. If you haven’t had a chance yet, I suggest checking out the Examining Your True Self as Kali goes Retrograde, Energy Update, recorded back on the 28th of September. In addition to their dance together Venus and Kali are also making very tight aspects to Neptune in Pisces (Venus in Trine, Kali in Sextile). Neptune in Pisces is about our dreams. Jupiter has just retrograded back into Pisces, during the eclipse this expansive energy will be at the 29°, whenever something appears at the 0 or 29 of a sign its energy is amplified; when we have an expansive energy like Jupiter in this location it is like turing the amp up to 11. You may also recall that one of the most powerful astrological events of this year full of powerful events was the Jupiter-Neptune conjunction back in April. This was a point of expanding our dreams, of helping us connect to the dreamtime. A shamaic energy helping us to bring our dreams into reality. Now we have Venus in Trine to Neptune as Jupiter turns up the volume and Kali helps us distinguish the false from the real. To me this feels like the cosmos saying yes it is hard in the 3D right now, we know and we’re sorry. But remember this is not the truth of who you are, this is simply the growing pains as the illusion of separation falls away.
Actually, the Neptune-Venus trine is a Grand Water Trine, because sitting over in Cancer we have Pallas (the Goddess of War) and Black Moon Lilith (who Will Not Submit), these two are exactly conjunct one another, a reminder that we need not ‘go along to get along’.. If we are going to bring this dream of love into the world it is important that it be a love that serves all, that honors all and that empowers all. Water is associated with our emotional bodies and this Grand Water Trine feels like a reminder to connect with our emotional intelligence. It is not about going to war against those who disagree with us; it is about allowing ourselves to exist in the fullness of our being, to explore where we submit due to fear of conflict, where we engage in combat because we are hurt. To recognize that each of us experiences pain, grief, anger and when backed into a corner will choose to fight or flee. As we connect to this truth for ourselves we can allow this truth for others. A mirror, held up to our reactions, which allows us to bring through a light of compassion rather than a sword of war. Pallas and Black Moon Lilith are also sitting exactly across the wheel from Pluto in Capricorn, emphasizing to us that just because combat is how we previously structured our world does not mean it has to be how we move forward.
Before we close this edition I am feeling called to bring in the energy of the now retrograde Mars and Sophia (Wisdom), they are closely conjunct in Gemini and sitting directly across the wheel from the Galactic Center. I was conversing with my sister the other day, sharing about the Blue Flame and an interesting marker I recently discovered in my personal natal chart, Sophia is exactly conjunct Michael in Virgo. As I realized this there was a rush through my being, Sophia and Michael feel very linked to the Blue Flame, learning they are conjunct in Virgo feels like a Blue Flame Anchor Marker, a little notation I placed in my chart at the time of my birth to highlight the importance of Wisdom in facilitating the level of Divine Love offered by the Blue Flame. As Leonard Cohen said about writing the song Hallelujah, it is about being able to “clearly see ‘Gods’ holy broken world for what it is, and still find the courage or heart to praise it.” As Mars moves ever so slowly backwards through Gemini and Sophia sits near the apogee, the Galactic Center is sandwiched between them on the other side of the wheel, serving us the wisdom to love this broken world for all that it is; to take this wisdom and all we have experienced through it and remember that an act of praise is also to let the broken bits fall away as we rejoice in all they have gifted us. The Galactic Center shines a light and imparts wisdom from the birth of our galaxy to help us communicate with the new that is being born.
OK there is one final trine before we close, it's a yummy one, Isis, the Divine Mother, is at 7° Virgo, Magdalena is at 7° of Capricorn, this exact trine is holding a beautiful energy of reclaiming and reforming our ideas of divinity, of creation of purity. The number 7 is powerful, often associated with good luck. The gift of this trine is to create our foundations from a space of being ‘whole unto self’. To allow the fullness of our stories to be witnessed and to create from the world from this fullness.
